In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in endless tasks, responsibilities, and the drive to keep moving forward. But just like a car running a long race, our spiritual journey requires moments of intentional slowing down and refueling. At times, it can also mean coming to a complete stop. In John 15, Jesus calls us to abide in him—to make him our true home and source. To do that, sometimes we need a pit stop, a rest stop, or even a dead stop.
Pit Stop – A pit stop is a brief but vital pause to get back on track. Just as race cars rely on their pit crews for quick maintenance, we need community, mentors, and support to stay spiritually healthy. These connections help us keep perspective, adjust our approach, and ensure we’re running the race with endurance. Think of this as the pause you take to pray and be open with friends, to study scripture in life groups, or gain wisdom from someone who’s walked the path you’re walking now.
Rest Stop – Unlike a pit stop, a rest stop calls us to park for a while, taking a real break from the race. We need time to relax, reflect, and recharge. Jesus frequently took time away from the crowds to pray and rest, setting an example for us. A rest stop could mean pulling back from busy routines, taking a retreat, or simply allowing ourselves time for quiet with God. This time is crucial to savor the journey, regain strength, and refocus on Christ as our source.
Dead Stop – Finally, a dead stop is a complete halt to address areas where we may have drifted far from God. We can often run so hard that we run past Jesus. In these moments, we need to stop entirely, recognize sin, or acknowledge a path that’s led us away from Him. In times of burnout, Christ calls us back home, urging us to repent and reconnect. This pause is challenging but renewing, bringing us back to the joy and freedom of abiding in Him.
Wherever you are on the journey, take the stop you need. Christ is waiting to renew, refuel, and restore you.
